In a shocking move from Fox, 9-1-1 has been canceled, but it will move to ABC for its seventh season.
Deadline reports that the series finale of the Angela Bassett and Ryan Murphy-produced show will be May 15. However, fans don’t have to despair just yet; the series has already been picked up by ABC for Season 7. This strengthens ABC’s slate of procedurals including Will Trent and The Rookie franchise (including The Rookie: Feds starring Niecy Nash-Betts).

“It has been an honor to be the founding network of 9-1-1 and we are grateful to Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, together with Angela Bassett, Peter Krause, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Oliver Stark, Aisha Hinds, Kenneth Choi, Ryan Guzman and the rest of the cast and crew, and 20th Television for delivering such an impactful series to Fox,” Fox said in a statement published by Deadline. “We wish them well after 9-1-1‘s final Fox season concludes.”
Disney Television Group President Craig Erwich said in a statement how ABC “is honored” 9-1-1 to ABC.

“It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air,” he said. Disney is the parent company of 20th Century Fox and (and by extension, the Fox network) after their notorious merger that brought the two entertainment titans together.

The outlet reports that Fox’s shifts in financial priorities are the reason for the cancellation. The series was the networks’ most expensive series, costing between $9 million to $10 million an episode. The change in Fox’s financial strategy has occurred after 20th Century Fox TV and the network were acquired by Disney. However, 9-1-1: Lone Star was recently renewed for a fifth season by Fox.

Bassett stars in the flagship show for the 9-1-1 franchise and, as a producer, has become the highest-paid woman on network television.
