Fox Orders Pilots For Jerrod Carmicheal's 'Rel,' Culture-Clash Comedy From Lee Daniels And Music Drama 'Mixtape'

Friday afternoon, Fox announced the ordering of three pilots that have been in development.

One of them is the Jerrod Carmichael-produced, multi-camera comedy starring Lil Rel Howery, which is now titled, Rel. The potential series first previously received a put pilot commitment. It revolves around a "prideful, self-made success who lives by the code to 'always believe in yourself and great things will come,' who finds that attitude put to the test when he learns his wife is having an affair with his own barber. He tries to rebuild his life post-divorce as a long-distance single father on the South Side of Chicago who is on a quest for love, respect and a new barber." Howery is writing the script and Carmichael is an EP. Mike Scully is the would-be showrunner.

The second is Our People, a single-camera comedy which comes from Lee Daniels and  Modern Family executive producer Vali Chandrasekaran. It is based on the Israeli show,  Nevsu: A Young Multicultural Couple. The show will center on " a man from a bombastic African family who doesn’t have a word in their native language for 'privacy' and his fiancée from a mid-western family trying to build a normal life together."

Lastly, there is Mixtape, a music drama from former Quantico showrunner Josh Safran and Annapurna Pictures' Megan Ellison. It is a "romantic musical drama that looks at a disparate group of interconnected people in contemporary Los Angeles through the lens of the music that defines who they are. Mixtape captures the different stages of love, exploring if time can heal a broken heart and if love can withstand life’s tragedies."
