FOX UK Picks Up 'Atlanta' for November Premiere

“Atlanta”

Let me first get this out of way. FX’s “Atlanta” is the best show on television right now. No “ifs” or “buts” about it. It’s perceptive and inventive with a real lived-in feel to it. And also, do I have to add that it’s just straight-out hysterical? I admit I never was a Donald Glover fan at first. I never really “got” him, if you know what I mean, and I’m certainly not in the demographic that the show is aimed for. But if it works, it works; and “Atlanta” works brilliantly.

And where did they find Brian Tyree Henry who plays Glover’s would-be gangsta rapper cousin, Paper Boi, for the show? That guy is comedy gold.

But the good news is that we here in the USA won’t be the only ones to appreciate the genius that is “Atlanta.”

It was announced today that FOX UK has acquired the UK broadcast rights for the show, after making a deal with its sister company Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution. The first season of “Atlanta” is scheduled to premiere on FOX UK sometime in November.

However, though FOX UK claims that it’ll be an “exclusive first run” in the UK, that actually isn’t true. The show has been available to watch for some UK audiences, via the UK Community Channel cable network and its online service, which is a “free to air” channel – a channel that allows any person with special broadcast equipment to receive the signal to view or listen to any content, without requiring a subscription or paying a one-off fee. The signal is carried on terrestrial radio signals and received with an antenna.

FOX UK has been making a concerted effort to increase the comedy programming on its network, to balance its focus on dramatic content. In fact FOX UK has been the British home of programming from the Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim” channel, and, no doubt, they also want to put a serious dent into the UK Community Channel’s viewership as well.
