Futuristic Actioner ‘Snowpiercer’ w/ Octavia Spencer Finally To Be Released Uncut

For over a

year, there has been a battle between Korean director Bong Joon-Ho (The Host, Mother)

and The Weinstein Company over his latest

film, the futuristic action move Snowpiercer

starring Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton,

Ed Harris, John Hurt and Octavia

Spencer.

TWC, which

has long history of tinkering with director’s films after they have picked them

up for distribution, acquired the U.S. distrib rights for the film two years

ago, after reading the script and seeing some footage.

The film was

released in Asia and Europe in the last summer to rave reviews, but TWC balked at

opening the film here until the film’s lengthy running time was cut to what

they considered a more manageable length.

The director

refused which resulted in stalemate, but now the issue has, thankfully, been resolved. The film will keep its original

length, but instead of a wide theatrical release, it will get a platform release

with a city by city roll-out and an eventual VOD release.

It’s not perfect,

but better this way than to see a butchered version of Bong’s original concept, which

deals with a “future where a failed global-warming experiment kills off most life on

the planet, a class system evolves aboard the Snowpiercer, a train that travels

around the globe via a perpetual-motion engine.

And the

trailer does look pretty enticing:
