With upfronts right around the corner, we are in the thick of pilot season!

One of the most buzzed about pilots is L.A.’s Finest, a television series spinoff of the Bad Boys film franchise.

The series would see Gabrielle Union reprise her role as Syd Bennett from Bad Boys 2, joined by Jessica Alba.

The trade publications have been chirping now that the pilot is a favorite at NBC, so we should honestly expect a series order any day.

When we chatted with Union about the series during press for her upcoming film Breaking In, she beamed about the project.

We’re really excited. And to be able to co-executive produce with Jessica Alba..it’s like, we feel like boss bitches. It just really feels good that two women of color are the leads, are the executive producers, put the whole thing together and that we know that we are deserving of this opportunity. That nobody gave it to us, we took it. So hopefully NBC agrees. No pressure, NBC (laughs)…but we really hope we are on the fall lineup.”

After landing at NBC after an intense bidding war and receiving a pilot commitment at the network, the potential series was officially ordered as a pilot earlier this month.

The series would see Union reprising her character, Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett from the second Bad Boys film. Burnett was an undercover DEA operative and sister of Martin Lawrence’s Marcus Burnett and love interest for Will Smith’s Mike Lowrey.

Here’s her status in the show: Syd Burnett, last seen in Miami taking down a drug cartel, now is a Los Angeles Police Department detective and can pursue all the pleasures Los Angeles has to offer and leave her past behind. But things will get complicated when her new partner, Nancy McKenna (Alba), learns that Syd’s unapologetic lifestyle might be masking a greater personal secret.”

The project is from Jerry Bruckheimer and Doug Belgrad, and Sony Pictures TV Studios is the studio. The spinoff is being written by NBC’s The Blacklist writers and producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier.

Alba and Union are executive producers alongside Sonnier Margolis, Bruckheimer, Belgrad, Jonathan Littman, KristieAnne Reed, Jeff Gaspin and Jeff Morrone.
