For weeks now, we’ve suspected that at the conclusion of the final season of Game of Thrones, at least one of the shows primary Black characters, Grey Worm (Jacob Anderson) or Missandei (Nathalie Emmanuel), would end up dying.
Major, sad and dark Game of Thrones spoilers are coming below.
Well, on Sunday, it actually happened. Missandei and Grey Worm didn’t get the chance to make it to Atlanta as the former was killed at the hands of Cersei (Lena Headey).
And it seems like more than her being killed in general, folks are mad at the way she was killed and where she met her maker — in the Game of Thrones’ equivalent to MAGA-land.
Y’all really let Missandei die in Maga country. ???? #GoT #GameOfThrones #DemThrones pic.twitter.com/GlOjwZ8HGV

While most are in agreement that Dany (Emilia Clarke) had been getting on folks’ nerves recently, it’s only right that she avenges Missandei’s death.

If you thought that the series wasn’t going to actually start killing main characters, think again:

On a more serious note, it’s good that we’re calling out the concerning racial optics about the character’s death:
I don’t give a damn how many innocent people gotta die to kill Cersei. They killed the only black woman on the show. Missandei must be avenged. #GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/IxPQVAGWXb

I’ll keep this brief – last night’s ep was written by the Game of Thrones exec producers/show runners so what happened to Missandei is EXACTLY on brand for them. I never had any hope for her surviving on their show…

I just want to write a bunch of fantasy tales, where the black women do not get sacrificed, hurt or tortured for no white lead.
You know what…. for anyone.
I’m fucking tired of this mess. #ForMissandei #missandei #GameofThrones

remember that d&d wanted to do a show where the south won the civil war while we discuss them having the only black women on the show in chains and publicly executed #GameOfThrones #demthrones

In a show where there are literally only two Black characters how she died had everything to do with race. She had minimal agency in her life & none in her death. https://t.co/Yf0GeekFho

My issue isn’t that Missandei’s death happened. I never expected her & Grey Worm to make it to that beach. My issue is that her death is the one way she said she didn’t want to die. She died in chains with no way to defend herself. Lyanna slays a giant. Missandei should have too.

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay was among the critics on Twitter. She and actress Jessica Chastain discussed their thoughts on Twitter. The former talked about how rape is utilized in the show, whlie the When They See Us creator noted that the show killed its the Black woman character it had during its duration.
Rape is not a tool to make a character stronger. A woman doesn’t need to be victimized in order to become a butterfly. The #littlebird was always a Phoenix. Her prevailing strength is solely because of her. And her alone.#GameOfThrones pic.twitter.com/TVIyt8LYxI

So… the one and only sister on the whole epic, years-long series? That’s what you wanna do? Okay. #GOT pic.twitter.com/O5G6YZMj0g
