George Tillman Jr Signs Up To Direct Musical Talent Show Project From 'Step Up' Scribe

George Tillman Jr

His latest work, The Inevitable Defeat Of Mister And Pete, made its world premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, but left the festival without a distributor (nothing’s been announced yet on that front); however, director George Tillman Jr. has been busy setting up a new project which Deadline reports will be based on an untitled pitch sale to Universal Pictures.

Duane Adler will pen the script for a feature film that will center on a failed songwriter who returns home to Chicago, to lead a group of at-risk youth to their annual talent show.

Adler’s past writing credits should give you some idea of what to expect here: Save the Last Dance, Save the Last Dance 2, Step Up, Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, Step Up Revolution.

While not exactly critical darlings, these movies were mostly cheaply made (relative to Hollywood studio averages), and raked in big box office globally – roughly $140 million in ticket sales each. So Adler definitely has a good thing going here, in a land where profit is #1.

Although, unfortunately, even with Tillman attached to direct Adler’s next script, I can’t say that I’m looking forward to it, in part due to Adler’s resume, and also the description of the project, which elicited a groan out of me when I first read it.

But it could be another box office hit for Adler, and for Tillman as well.

One Tillman project that I’m most interested in, is the Mile Davis film he’s attached to direct that will be loosely based on Gregory Davis’ book Dark Magus: The Jekyll and Hyde Life of Miles Davis (Gregory Davis being Miles Davis’ eldest son).
