The Gotham Film & Media Institute announced the nominees for this year’s Gotham Awards. The awards ceremony, highlighting primarily indie films with a budget of less than $35 million, is considered to be the first temperature check for the Oscars. The awards also highlight television as well.

This year, all categories have been made gender-neutral, with separate acting categories restructured into Outstanding Leading and Supporting Performance categories for feature films and the addition of an Outstanding Performance category for series. The Breakthrough Performer category already existed.

“We congratulate the 2021 Gotham Award nominees and look forward to celebrating together live and in-person in a few weeks. This year, as previously noted, we are proud to introduce gender-neutral categories for our acting awards as we continue to execute upon our mission to champion inclusivity and celebrate the boldest storytellers in the world,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham.

Of the nominees, some highlights include Rebecca Hall’s Passing, starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga, which nabbed a Best Feature and individual nominations for all three. Also Shatara Michelle Ford’s Test Pattern got noms for Best Feature, Ford for Breakthrough Director and Brittany S. Hall for her performance.

Other film acting nominees include Frankie Faison in The Killing of Kenneth Chamberlain, Taylour Paige in Zola and Colman Domingo in Zola.

On the series front, nominations came in for Blindspotting, Small Axe, Lupin, The Underground Railroad and Run the World.
