Hair Love, the animated short that has already become beloved by the internet and celebrities alike, will finally have its big-screen premiere.

The short by Matthew A. Cherry, a director (The Red Line, Whiskey Cavalier) and creative executive for Monkeypaw Productions will debut in front of The Angry Birds Movie 2 August 14. The film, about a young girl named Zuri who is getting her hair styled by her father for the first time, will feature the voice of Issa Rae as Zuri’s mother.

The short, which features animation based on the illustrations by Black artist Vashti Harrison. Harrison also did the illustrations for the children’s book Hair Love, also written by Cherry.

Cherry wrote about the news on his Twitter page. “From a Kickstarter campaign to the big screen. Excited to announce that our #HairLove short film will be playing theatrically in front of #AngryBirds2 once it hit theaters August 14th.”

Cherry also released a statement regarding the film, which became the highest-funded short film for Kickstarter in 2017, when it earned $280,000 for financing beyond its initial $75,000 goal.

“To see this project go from a Kickstarter campaign to the big screen is truly a dream come true. I couldn’t be more excited for Hair Love to be playing with The Angry Birds Movie 2 in front of a wide audience and for the world to see our touching story a Black father trying to figure out how to do his daughter’s hair for the very first time,” he said.
