The trailer for Harriet has been released. Directed by Kasi Lemmons (Eve’s Bayou) it stars Tony winner Cynthia Erivo has the titular, iconic freedom fighter.

The official description: Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, Harriet tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.

The film also stars  Leslie Odom Jr., Jennifer Nettles, Joe Alwyn, Janelle Monae, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Clarke Peters, Henry Hunter Hall, Zackary Momoh, Deborah Ayorinde, Vondie Curtis-Hall, Omar Dorsey and Antonio J. Bell.

Harriet hits theaters October 1.

Kasi Lemmons directed from a screenplay she co-wrote with Gregory Allen Howard. Debra Martin Chase, under her Martin Chase Productions, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, with Stay Gold Features and Gregory Allen Howard are producers.
