HBO's 'Confederate' Is Probably Not Happening As Showrunners Ink 'Star Wars' Deal

Is Confederate finally dead at HBO?

Well….not officially, but don’t hold your breath.

The planned series, from Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss has been in development since it received huge backlash after its initial announcement.

On Tuesday, it was announced Benioff and Weiss had signed on with Disney to write and produce a new series of Star Wars films.

Being the huge commitment that this is, it is unlikely that the duo will have time for anything else, including Confederate.

After the initial announcement of the faux history show, the network and execs made a series of apologies.

According to its official description, the series would chronicle “the events leading to the Third American Civil War. The series takes place in an alternate timeline, where the southern states have successfully seceded from the Union, giving rise to a nation in which slavery remains legal and has evolved into a modern institution. The story follows a broad swath of characters on both sides of the Mason-Dixon Demilitarized Zone — freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, abolitionists, journalists, the executives of a slave-holding conglomerate and the families of people in their thrall.”

The criticism, including a strong #NoConfederate campaign led by  ReBecca Theodore-Vachon, April Reign,  Lauren Warren, Shanelle Little and Jamie Broadnax “broke the internet,” and we’d guess this probably had a hefty hand in the series not being worked on right now.

Do you think Confederate is done for or will the controversial series see the light of day?
