HBO Orders 'Westworld' to Series w/ Strong Ensemble Cast That Includes Jeffrey Wright & Thandie Newton. Watch Teasers

Thandie Newton and Jeffrey Wright will be returning to serial TV as part of the impressive ensemble cast of HBO’s "Westworld," which the network has now officially ordered to series.

Inspired by Michael Crichton’s 1973 film of the same name, HBO describes its adaptation as a dark tale about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.

Anthony Hopkins stars as a Dr. Robert Ford, a brilliant engineer and chairman of the board of Westworld, a futuristic, adult-themed amusement park – who has an uncompromising creative vision for the park and means of realizing that vision.

Also in the cast are Evan Rachel Wood, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolso Berdal, Angela Sarafyan and Simon Quarterman.

Newton will play a character named Maeve Millay, who is described as beautiful and razor-sharp, with a knack for survival – Westworld’s madame whose seen-it-all, a POV that will be challenged. Meanwhile, Wright will play a character named Bernard Lowe, who is described as a brilliant and quixotic head of the park’s programming division, who possesses a keen observation of human nature that inspires his work, which is, creating artificial people.

The new series adaptation will be executive produced by J.J. Abrams, who seemingly has his hands in so much these days, both on the big and small screens. He’s a busy guy!

Jonathan Nolan (Christopher Nolan’s brother, who also co-wrote a number of Christopher’s films, as well as the CBS hit series "Person of Interest") co-wrote the pilot (with Lisa Joy), and will direct as well.

In Crichton’s 1973 film, Yul Brynner starred as a malfunctioning robot gunslinger.

Newton currently stars in the DirecTV drama series "Rogue," which was recently renewed for a third season.

Wright was most recently seen on another HBO series, "Boardwalk Empire."
