With the premiere of mixed-ish set to take place September 24 on ABC, black-ish breakout star Marsai Martin talked with Variety at the show’s premiere to discuss what a spinoff centering her character, Diane Johnson, would look like. Martin then revealed she likes to see where Diane is at during her preteen years.

“We’re not young, but we’re not grown either,” she told a reporter. “We’re still in that weird awkward space of just trying to figure out where we are in life.”

For those unfamiliar, Diane Johnson, as portrayed by Martin, is the precocious daughter of Andre (Anthony Anderson) and Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross).

In the event that a spinoff on Diane Johnson does come to fruition, it would mark the third black-ish spinoff. So far, the long-running ABC sitcom has spawned two shows: the Yara Shahidi-led show, grown-ish, and the aforementioned mixed-ish, which will focus on the upbringing of Rainbow Johnson.
