Hip-Hop Industry-Set Crime Drama "You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Kills You" Exec Prod By Spike Lee Sold To Distributor

First wrote about this about a year ago and have been keeping tabs on it since then, although I haven't seen anything of it, except for the trailer and clips posted last year, which don't seem to be available anymore. So I have nothing to show you.

But you might be able to see the full film fairly soon given today's news.

Michael Pinckney's feature film debut, executive-produced by Spike Lee by the way, titled You’re Nobody ’til Somebody Kills You, starring Michael K. Williams, and many others.

It was announced today at the European Film Market, where deals have been happening en masse daily since the market started last week, that Pinckne's film has been sold to indie distributor Grindstone Entertainment, primarily a home video distribution company (they released a number of 50 Cents recent films); mostly films with recognizable names that can earn a buck or two on DVD/VOD; although recall Courtney's (S&A's new weekend writer's) report over the weekend that said the straight-to-DVD market is in decline as companies like Grindstone look to straight-to-VOD instea.

But it’s been a long-road for the project, being initially announced in 2007! By many accounts, principal photography was completed back in 2010, and the film was in post-production for awhile.

There's been little media related to the film released, except some poster art.

I heard there was a preview private screening in NYC some time late last year, but I wasn't invited, so can't confirm or deny that.

An indie crime drama, the film's synopsis reads:

Set in the perilous world of the Hip Hop industry. Music and murder and collide as a serial killer with an appetite for some of Hip Hops biggest stars is on the loose. Two New York homicide detectives are thrown into a world they know nothing about in hopes to nab the killer. With a multitude of leads and only lyrical epitaphs as clues the detectives go deep into the world of Hip Hop in search of the killer or killers. In it the find a cast of characters, all who could benefit from the murders. At the center of the investigation is Manchild, a rap star who is enjoying a meteoric rise to fame but beginning to question the madness in the industry and the shallowness of those around him. When an attempt is made on his life, he fears he’s next on the killers list. The surprise ending comes to a climax as the detectives are hot on the killers trail and discover that the killer is not who they thought it was.

No word on what Grindstone's plans for the film are, dates, formats, etc.
