'I Wanna Dance With Somebody': Sony Wins Bidding War For Estate-Backed Whitney Houston Biopic

Sony has won a bidding war for the upcoming biopic on Whitney Houston. Clive Davis and the Houston estate are on-board for the film, directed by The Photograph helmer Stella Meghie. The film will be under Sony’s TriStar division.

Anthony McCarten, the screenwriter of Bohemian Rhapsody, the biopic detailing the creation of Queen and the rise of Freddie Mercury, is the writer.

Pat Houston, Houston’s sister-in-law, will produce the film for the Houston Estate alongside Davis, McCartin, Denis O’Sullivan, and Larry Mestel of Primary Wave Music. Also, since the estate is heavily involved, this means that Houston’s entire catalog of songs will be available for use in the film.

Houston has been the subject of film and television before, however, none of these projects were authorized by the Houston Estate. With this backing, plus the use of her catalog, it stands to reason that we will finally get what could be considered a “canon” telling of her life story.
