After Will Smith had to bow out of the role due to scheduling conflicts, Idris Elba is now in talks to take over the character of Deadshot in the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel. The DC Comics film will be directed by James Gunn, and was in search of a new Deadshot quickly, as production is set for September.

The Hollywood Reporterwho broke the news, says: Sources say that Elba met with Gunn on Friday and it went so swimmingly that talks began with the studio in earnest. Elba was the first and only choice for Gunn and the studio. Warners is extremely high on The Suicide Squad and its script, written by Gunn, so much so that the project is barrelling forward into the casting stage after Gunn quickly turned out several drafts. Before his boarding, the project ambled for a couple of years with a revolving door of writers and directors.

The report also says that the film will mostly be made of characters who did not appear in the first film, other than major ones like Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn, Deadshot and Joel Kinnaman’s Rick Flagg.

The film has a release date of August 6, 2021.
