Netflix has given a straight-to-series, eight-episode order to Turn Up Charlie, a new series starring and executive produced by Idris Elba.
Elba will star in the titular role as a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a manny to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter.
Elba is executive producing with Gary Reich and Tristram Shapeero. Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito are co-executive producers with Georgia Lester serving as a writer and supervising producer. Other writers are Laura Neal, Femi Oyeniran and Victoria Asare-Archer. Shapeero and Matt Lipsey are directing. Gill Isles is a producer.
“Netflix have allowed us to bring a very mischievous and unique passion project to life through their relentless support, enthusiasm and equally met passion. It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to work with Idris and to do so on a project that is so close to his heart is a privilege,” said Reich.
“I get to do more comedy? I’m funny. Watch me work. Well done Netflix for recognizing a brother,” said Elba.
The show is from Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Green Door Pictures.
Production will begin this May in the U.K.
Elba began his career as a DJ before branching into film and TV.
This will be his second comedy series, joining his Sky One series In the Long Run.
