Insecure executive producer Prentice Penny has signed a two-year deal with HBO.

Penny, who also writes and directs for the show, “will develop, write, produce and direct television projects in both comedy and drama for the premium cabler through his production company, A Penny for Your Thoughts Entertainment.” Penny will also grow his company under the deal, hiring Alex Soler, formerly of Sonar Entertainment and Endemol Shine, as his new head of development.

This opportunity not only increases Penny’s influence within HBO but Insecure‘s importance to the network overall. It also proves something else: the Black Hollywood renaissance happening in TV and film is only gaining more and more momentum. The more deals our creatives get, the more probable it will be for our stories to continue to be told to the masses.

Even more importantly, more Black creatives in the industry mean owning our stake in Hollywood without having to capitulate. As we have seen from the decades of studios telling Black narratives without Black voices in the mix, owning your businesses and studios and earning deals as the one Penny has with HBO is key.
