Octavia Spencer will star alongside Riz Ahmed in sci-fi film Invasion, which has had its worldwide rights picked up by Amazon Studios.

Deadline reports that the film will be directed by UK filmmaker Michael Pearce, with Amazon Studios producing with Raw and Film4. Pearce and Joe Barton are the film’s screenwriters. The film will be shot domestically later this year.

Invasion is a thriller following two brothers who, with their father (Ahmed), an illustrious member of the Marines, are trying to escape from “an unhuman threat,” according to the synopsis.

“As the journey takes them in increasingly dangerous and unexpected directions, the boys will need to confront hard truths and leave their childhood behind,” the synopsis continues. Spencer’s role in the film is as a probation officer who helps Ahmed’s character come home.

With Spencer and Ahmed as the leads of this film, Invasion marks another notch in POC actors’ collective belt when it comes to diversifying a white-dominated genre. It also marks another level of expansion in Spencer’s career, which now includes crime thriller series Truth Be Told, horror film Ma, historical drama series Self-Made: Inspired By The Life Of Madam CJ Walker, and fantasy with the upcoming film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s The Witches.
