Fresh off of securing an eight-figure TV and film deal with Warner Bros., trailblazing creator Issa Rae opened up on wrapping up the HBO series on NBC’s Today.

In her interview, Rae revealed she was ready to let the show go and knew where she wanted to end it.

“I’m definitely ready to let it go. I knew that I wanted to end it after five seasons,” she said. “And I feel like I’m really proud of this season that we’re shooting now. It’s so much fun, and it’s made me appreciate the show in a different way.”

Rae, who got her breakthrough after the success of her viral web series Awkward Black Girl, revealed she how she was surprised when bringing her sensibilities to the mainstream.

“I was complaining a lot about, like, what I wasn’t seeing on TV. And, you know, this was creating a character and a world to be like, if I can do it, and I know mainstream TV can do it,” she said. “And so I was even surprised after the first episode, then I was like, ‘Oh God, I gotta write more and catch up.’”

Shadow and Act recently spoke with Rae about the success of her web series, 10 years later. “I just wanted to create a character that I could relate to because I was really frustrated with not seeing representation of my friends and my family members on-screen,” she said. “I was complaining a lot, and someone on my blog was just like, ‘You complain a lot, why don’t you make something?’ That was the impetus for me to stop making excuses about this character and just create it.”
