Issa Rae is set to produce and could star in a reimagining of Set It Off at New Line Cinema.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Insecure creator and star is producing with her Issa Rae Productions partner Montrel McKay. Syreeta Singleton and Nina Gloster are the scriptwriters.

The original 1996 movie, directed by F. Gary Gray starred Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kimberly Elise. It chronicled a group of friends who, for different reasons,  began robbing banks, resulting in tragic consequences.

Earning $41 million against its $9 million budget, it was a box office hit and garnered positive reviews from critics. It also showed the power of a film with Black women as the leads at a time when Black actresses were rarely afforded the opportunity.

No other details about the project or its development are available at this time.
