Jason Derulo has choice words for film critics who didn’t like Cats.

Derulo, who stars in Cats, hit back at critics who expressed dissatisfaction with the film by saying that critics don’t know what they’re talking about.

“Any time you defy what an art form is, any time you defy all rules, there’s going to be some pushback, obviously,” he said to TMZ, according to IndieWire. “But it’s an incredible piece of art done by some of the best people in the world. I am just excited for the people to actually see it because reviewers, I mean, what the hell do they know? Have they made a film ever in their life?”

It’s certainly not the first time a star has lashed out at critics for not loving their movie. But the decision to use critics as a whipping post is tiring, at best. Critics provide checks and balances for the entertainment industry and help move the industry forward through their positive and negative reviews.

The film has been widely derided by critics as being an absolute mess, earning a low 18 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. In what is being labeled an unprecedented move, the film is undergoing additional editing while in theaters. It has been announced that the film’s CGI will be “improved,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. Theaters will receive new copies of the film either by satellite server or, for some theaters without satellite access, by hard drive.
