Writer/director and Shadow & Act contributor Nijla Mu’min garnered rave reviews for her directorial debut Jinn, which received the Special Jury Recognition for Writing at SXSW.

Now, more opportunities are headed Mu’min’s way, as the director has joined the all-female directorial team of Ava DuVernay’s popular drama Queen Sugar!

The series, which airs on OWN, made history with its all-female directorial slate last season as viewers were treated to episodes directed by the likes of Victoria Mahoney, Tina Mabry and Neema Barnett. This would mark Mu’min’s television directorial debut.

The movie, a coming of age tale about a teenage girl named Summer whose life is upended when her mother, Jade, converts to Islam, stars Simone Missick, Zoe Renee, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Hisham Tawfiq, Kelly Jenrette, Dorian Missick, Ashlei Foushee, Damien Smith and Maya Morales.

The third season Queen Sugar is set to premiere in a two-night special on May 29 and May 30.
