Baobab Studios has announced today that John Legend is toplining the cast of its latest virtual reality animated film titled "Rainbow Crow," which will make its debut next week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Legend will be providing both the speaking and singing voices of the title character for this new musical adventure; he will also be executive producing.

To be presented in chapters as a virtual storybook, the VR film's plot is inspired by a traditional Native American folktale. Its official synopsis reads: The carefree forest animals imagine that spring will last forever. However, winter comes and the animals soon realize that their lives are in danger. What they need is a hero: what they need is Rainbow Crow. Step inside the world of this moving, soon-to-be classic, musical experience for all ages.

"Rainbow Crow" is being directed by Baobab co-founder, Eric Darnell, who previously directed the "Madagascar" series of movies for Dreamworks.

“'Rainbow Crow' brings storytelling and music together in a way no one else has yet in virtual reality," Legend says in a press statement. "It’s an incredible medium for inspiring a journey of self-discovery and finding your way in times to darkness. In light of what’s going on in today’s world, it’s a message of deep meaning that people from all walks of life can embrace.”

Baobab Studios' previous VR films "Invasion" featured Ethan Hawke as the narrator, and "Asteroids" starred Elizabeth Banks as one of its main characters.

More information on "Rainbrow Crow's" full cast list, and release schedule will be announced in coming weeks.

The Tribeca Film Festival runs from April 19-29.
