Jurnee Smollett-Bell has landed the role of Black Canary in Warner Bros./DC Comics upcoming film Birds of Prey film centering on women superheroes.

She joins Margot Robbie, who toplines the film by reprising her Suicide Squad role of Harley Quinn, Mary Elizabeth Winstead rounds out the trio as The Huntress.

For the role, multiple trade publications said that Smollett-Bell was up against Gugu Mbatha-Raw, who tested for the role and Janelle Monae was also reportedly up for the role.

In the comics, Black Canary (real name Dinah Lance) is one of the earliest superheroines in DC Comics history, first debuting in 1947. The character is often paired with Green Arrow. She has been mostly depicted as a skilled martial artist with her superpower being a shrieking scream called a “canary cry” which can destroy things and dismantle her enemies.

The last key role, Rene Montaya, a lesbian detective, has not been cast, but One Day at a Time actress Justina Machado and Vida actress Roberta Colindrez both tested for the role.

Birds of Prey has a released date set for February 7, 2020. Cathy Yan is the director.
