Saturday Night Live‘s Kenan Thompson is set to star in a Lorne Michaels-executive produced comedy Saving Larry, which has received a production commitment from NBC.

According to Deadline, the comedy is written by Superstore executive producer Jackie Clarke and focuses on a widower who has to fill the vacuum his wife left for his kids after she dies. On top of that, his father-in-law is constantly looking over his shoulder. Michaels and Andrew Singer is executive producing through Michaels’ production company, Broadway Video. Clarke will also executive produce.

With the news of Saving Larry coming, that also leaves the question of if Thompson, Saturday Night Live‘s longest-running cast member with 16 seasons under his belt, will leave SNL. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thompson will likely leave the show, although sources have told The Hollywood Reporter no decision has been made regarding Thompson yet. “Ultimately, a final decision would come closer to May (2019) when NBC makes its series order decisions,” wrote the outlet.

Thompson has had a long career in improv comedy, starting out as a kid on Nickelodeon’s All That with his Kel Mitchell, who became his comedic partner in several skits. The two also had their own spinoff show, Kenan & Kel and the film Good Burger, which we have done a retrospective on right here.

This is also not the only Saturday Night Live news; the show has announced that comedian Ego Nwodim will join the cast in its upcoming 44th season.
