Kenny Leon Will Revive 'Children of a Lesser God' Possibly w/ a Black Woman to Play the Lead

null"Children of a Lesser God," already an onstage (and film) success, is heading back to Broadway, in a revival that will be directed by Tony Award-winner Kenny Leon, producer Hal Luftig announced Monday.

A 2015-2016 Broadway season bow is planned.

No cast has been announced yet, producer Luftig did add that he and director Leon are "aiming to cast actors of various ethnicities, including, possibly, an African American to play the lead character of Sarah."

None of that should be a surprise, given recent revivals of previous shows, with diverse casts (at times, all-black casts), unlike their original productions. See "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "A Streetcar Named Desire" to name 2.

"Children of a Lesser God," by Mark Medoff, follows the relationship between a deaf woman and a teacher at a school for the deaf.

"Children of a Lesser God" was later made into a movie, which won an Academy Award for deaf actress Marlee Matlin.

Leon also directed the all-black TV movie version of "Steel Magnolias" a couple of years ago.
