The second project sold to ABC under her recently inked overall production deal with the network, Kerry Washington aims to bring even more diversity to television with comedy series titled “Melting Potts” which the “Scandal” star will develop for ABC via her Simpson Street Productions shingle.

The comedy will focus on a large blended family made up of “equal parts New Jersey, Indian, Muslim, and Jewish” the press release states, and will follow a newly-married couple struggling against culture, tradition and generations to build their idea of a “normal” American family.

The series will be written by Ryan Jaffe, who will also serve as executive producer alongside Washington and her producing partner Sharla Sumpter Bridgett.

The first project under Washington’s deal with ABC, which was announced in August, is a police serial titled “Patrol,” described as a workplace drama about four female LAPD officers who attended the police academy together five years ago and are forced to reconnect after a high-stakes, traumatic secret returns to haunt them.

The project is being scripted by Chitra Sampath (writer/producer of the first season of ABC’s “Secrets and Lies”), who will also co-executive produce.

It doesn’t appear that Washington will also star in either of these 2 potential series, should they be picked up; all we know at this point is that she will produce/exec produce via her recently-launched production company, Simpson Street, under which she also produced (and starred in) HBO’s Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas drama, “Confirmation.”

“Scandal” will return for its 6th (and possibly final) season in January 2017, unfolding over 16 episodes, instead of 22. If it does end after season 6, Washington’s recent moves behind the camera certainly make sense.

Washington is repped by CAA, Special Artists Agency, and Washington Square Arts.
