Houston Rockets guard Kevin Porter Jr. was arrested after allegedly assaulting and strangling his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick, at a New York City hotel on Monday, according to law enforcement.

Porter returned to the Millennium Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan, where the couple stayed after a night out, early Monday morning. Gondrezick was upset with the time of his return and locked the door. Porter entered the room with the help of hotel security and then assaulted Gondrezick, sources told ABC News. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m., police said.

The 26-year-old woman was struck “repeatedly about the face with a closed fist, causing a laceration above her right eye and bruising and substantial pain to her face,” according to the criminal complaint. Porter reportedly applied “pressure to her neck by forcefully squeezing it, causing her to experience difficulty breathing, redness and bruising to her neck, and substantial pain,” the complaint added.

Gondrezick was hospitalized at NYU Langone Medical Center with fractured vertebrae in her neck.

Authorities took Porter into custody following the incident and charged him with assault and strangulation. He pleaded not guilty and was released on a $75,000 cash bail Tuesday. A judge imposed a temporary order of protection. The 23-year-old NBA player is due back in court on Oct. 16.

Both the Houston Rockets and the NBA released statements following the incident.

“We are in the process of gathering information surrounding the matter involving Kevin Porter Jr,” the Rockets said in a statement, according to Al Jazeera. “We have no further comment at this time.”

“The league office is in contact with the Houston Rockets and in the process of gathering more information,” NBA spokesman Mike Bass said.

According to ABC News, Porter was arrested in November 2020 on a weapons charge but wasn’t indicted. The Cleveland Cavaliers made him inactive for half the season following the incident at the time. He was eventually traded to the Houston Rockets in January 2021.
