Kiki Layne is set to star in Skydance Television production Ring Shout, based on the novella by Djéli Clark. Kasi Lemmons will serve as showrunner along with write and direct the series. No network is attached as of yet.

Like the novella, the TV series is a historical fantasy set in the 1920s American south, where monsters from Hell possess the Ku Klux Klan. With D.W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation, the monsters are able to feed from the racism of the growing number of Klan members. But to kill these monsters, a Black freedom fighter named Maryse Boudreaux and her two friends/compatriots–a sharpshooter and a Harlem Hellfighter–use the weapons at their disposal to kill the monsters back to Hell.

“But,” as the description states, “something even bigger is brewing in the Macon, and the war on Hell is about to heat up. And Maryse, haunted by events of her past, is the only one who can put a stop to it all.”

Lemmons and Layne will also executive produce with Clark, Matt Jackson, Marc Evans, and Skydance Television’s team consisting of Dana Goldberg, David Ellison and Bill Bost.

Fresh off of Netflix’s The Old Guard Layne is booked and busy as she is filming Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling opposite Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Harry Styles. She is also starring in the long-awaited Coming 2 America, which is due next year.
