Sharp Stick, Lena Dunham’s new film, stars actors such as Taylour Paige and Luka Sabbat.

The film has now unveiled its trailer and release date. It also stars Kristine Froseth, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jon Bernthal, Scott Speedman and Dunham.

The pic will open on July 29 in Los Angeles, New York City, followed by a nationwide release on August 5.

Here is the synopsis of the film:

Sarah Jo (Kristine Froseth) is a sensitive and naive 26-year-old living on the fringes of Hollywood with her disillusioned mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and influencer sister (Taylour Paige). Working as a caregiver and just longing to be seen, she begins an exploratory affair with her older, married employer (Jon Bernthal), and is thrust into a startling education on sexuality, loss and power.

Sharp Stick is written, directed, and produced by Dunham. Paige is a co-executive producer alongside Ben Browning, Glen Basner, Jon Bernthal, Kenneth Yu, and Will Greenfield.

Lena Dunham on 'Sharp Stick':

The film which debuted at Sundance this year is set to wring out the “inborn judgment and shame around female desire” out of a stigmatized culture, according to Dunham, as reported by IndieWire.

Dunham spoke about Sharp Stick’s themes of the sexuality of women in film saying, “It’s a joke as old as celluloid that the minute we spot a sexually active girl in a horror movie, we know she’s going to die in a blood death.”

Dunham continued, “She’s let someone touch her below the neck, and so she’s marked for murder. But there’s a more subtle crime we commit toward women on camera, where female characters who dare to take a journey sexually may not get full-on murdered, but they do endure another kind of torture — one more exquisite and subtle.”
