Aretha Franklin, who passed away Thursday, August 16, at 76 years old, was an artist who was in nearly every part of our society. Her range even reached to one of the most popular shows in the ’90s, A Different World.

Director, Monkeypaw Productions exec and Twitter superstar Matthew A. Cherry retweeted a video posted to Twitter by comedian Sinbad, one of the original A Different World cast members. The video features Franklin singing the theme song, which stayed in rotation from the second season through the fifth.

Cherry, however, probably voiced the opinion of a lot of people who have watched A Different World faithfully without realizing the voice singing the theme song was Franklin’s:

Don’t go too hard on Cherry; we all have our blind spots. For as many people who didn’t know Franklin sang the A Different World theme song, there are just as many folks who don’t realize Chaka Khan sang the Reading Rainbow theme song. But this also underscores a lesson we all need to remember whenever a beloved icon passes; we have to give those who are part of the fabric of our lives their flowers while they’re still here.
