Viola Davis shared how colorism tainted her landing the role of How to Get Away with Murder in her upcoming memoir.

According to The Hollywood Reporter via the New York Times, Davis wrote in Finding Me: A Memoir that after she got cast as Annalise Keating, a friend told her that several Black actors and actresses felt “she wasn’t pretty enough to pull it off.”

Davis said that this experience was unlike the others she'd had experienced in her career, and she "couldn't shake" it off.

However, she said that working on The Woman King, based on the all-female Dahomey Warriors, helped her shift her mindset.

“The Woman King reflected all of the things that the world told me were limiting: Black women with crinkly, curly hair who were darker than a paper bag, who were warriors.”

In February, Davis shared the first look from The Woman King, which also stars John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, and Lashana Lynch. In the Instagram post, David wrote, “I’m deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life.”

Davis’ memoir is set for an April 26 release. The Woman King will come to theaters this fall.
