Lorraine Toussaint has joined the cast of the pilot for the television series reboot of The Equalizer at CBS.
She joins the pilot’s lead, Queen Latifah, who is stepping into a role described as a new take on the character played by Edward Woodward on the original series and by Denzel Washington in the film franchise.
The Equalizer was originally a television series on CBS from 1985-1989 with Woodard. It was adapted for film in 2014 starring Washington. A sequel, The Equalizer 2, was released in 2018.
According to Deadline, who broke the news, Toussaint will play “Frieda ‘Aunt Fry’ Lascombe, Robyn’s aunt and her rock who’s been living with Robyn and her daughter, Delilah, since Robyn’s divorce. She has an undeniable wisdom and is a truth-teller who tends to be a wary optimist.”
The project is from Andrew Marlowe and Terri Miller, Davis Entertainment, Queen Latifah’s Flavor Unit, Debra Martin Chase’s Martin Chase Productions, Universal Television and CBS TV Studios. Marlowe and Miller are the showrunners and writers.
