'Lottery Ticket' Director Set for Dark Comedy 'Break It Down' About Washed Up 1990's R&B Star

nullWith "diversity" now an industry buzzword, and "black history" (broadly speaking) seemingly now becoming a bottomless well of stories for Hollywood and indie producers alike, I suppose now is maybe as good a time as ever to revisit this project which was first announced 2 years ago, in 2013, but has been in Limbo since then.

Music video helmer Erik White was previously attached to direct what was described then as a dark comedy about a washed up 1990’s R&B music star, for StarStream Entertainment (producers of “Life of Crime,” starring Jennifer Aniston, and the exec producers of “Lee Daniels’ ‘The Butler’"), with music produced by Gregg Alexander.

White, whose credits include multiple episodes of “The Glee Project” and several Chris Brown videos, and who made his feature film directing debut with "Lottery Ticket" in 2010, is still attached to direct the film, which was, and still is titled "Break It Down."

And, per a report from The Wrap this afternoon, Night Fox Entertainment (producers of "Z for Zachariah" which Chiwetel Ejiofor co-stars in, and which premiered at Sundance this year) has also boarded the project, with White directing from a script penned by Ted Beck (the listed writer when the project was first announced 2 years ago).

"Break It Down" follows a washed-up 1990s R&B star who must come to terms with his selfish and destructive behavior in order to get his band back together and court the woman of his dreams.

Night Fox Entertainment’s Timothy Christian and Rab Butler will produce with StarStream Entertainment’s Jordan Kessler and Liz Destro. Also Amber Rasberry, production executive on Tyler Perry‘s "For Colored Girls" and "Peeples," is also producer.

"We are thrilled to be working with the team at Night Fox to bring this love letter of 90’s R&B to the big screen," said Kessler.
