Spoiler alert for Lovecraft country season 1!

Though some people still think there is a possibility that he’s still alive, Jonathan Majors wants Lovecraft Country fans to know that Atticus is, indeed, dead.

He’s dead,” he told Entertainment Weekly. Yeah, he’s dead.”

He said news of his death was a bit of a surprise” to him, since he found out about the ending during the middle of the season’s shoot. I was a bit heartbroken,” he said. …That reminded me of one of the things I really thought of early on playing Atticus: What is a hero? And the hero is he or she who allows their heart to break. So, I thought that’s the way it should be. It is the most organic ending to Atticus in a way. It’s interesting because I remember I thought while shooting it, ‘This is the episode where he’s at peace for the first time.'”

Majors talked about the moment Atticus tells his mother he doesn’t want to die and how she reminds him that it is part of his destiny and part of their family’s legacy.

He passes it on,” said Majors. “It’s living in Leti. It’s living in George, potentially. Then, I task my father with it–of how to live better and don’t make the same mistakes we did. So he lives on, like all people do, through other people.

Lovecraft Country season 2 hasn’t been officially ordered yet, and if it does come back, it is unclear if the show would pick up with this story or do an entirely different one, like an anthology.
