Jamie Chung has earned overwhelming praise for her portrayal of Ji-Ah, a Korean woman whose body is possessed by a kumiho, in the acclaimed HBO horror series Lovecraft Country. However, she expressed that she feared she won’t get another role like it in the future.

In an interview with IndieWire, Chung discussed the history of representation of Asians and Asian Americans in film and television.

“I’m scared that I won’t ever get a role like this again,” she told IndieWire. “It’s pretty rare that these types of characters come across an actor’s path.”

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Chung also revealed she pitched and sold her own show due to the impact her Lovecraft Country role had on her.  However, she acknowledged the difficult trajectory and stereotyping that befalls people of color in Hollywood.

“It’s a hard thing to be able to work in Hollywood — especially when I started — as a minority,” Chung said. “It was problematic, it was oversexualized, it was stereotypical roles. I’m not proud of the fact that a lot of us had to start off that way,”

With the inclusion of people of color both in front of and behind the camera, Chung revealed her hopes that her Lovecraft Country storyline will spark a conversation regarding the cultural gap between Asians and Asian Americans.

“I just hope it starts to spark the conversation that we can be proud of our culture, we’re all human. I hope it starts the conversation and bridges the gap.”
