BBC One’s season five premiere of Luther has set a record for the network.

According to Deadline, the Idris Elba-starring drama, which aired New Year’s Day, brought in 5.6 million to 5.9 million viewers, making it the UK’s most-watched program on New Year’s Day. The premiere also tied with the first and second seasons as the series’ best.

The series’ return has been long awaited, especially after the teaser BBC One released late in 2018, featuring DCI John Luther (Elba) tied up at the mercy of criminals.

The fifth season of Luther includes Wunmi Mosaku and Hermione Norris. Mosaku plays DS Catherine Halliday, who helps Luther solve this season’s web of crime. Hermione Norris is also part of this season as psychiatrist Dr. Vivien Lake.

No firm date has been set for Luther‘s US premiere. But television isn’t the only way you will be able to see Luther; At the end of 2018, Elba confirmed that a Luther film is on the way.
