After reports surfaced last week that he was in talks to return for the reboot in development, Malik Yoba has officially boarded the New York Undercover revival. The potential series currently has a pilot order at ABC.

It was rumored last week that he and Luna Lauren Velez, who starred in the original series, were in negotiations. No word yet on if Velez is officially returning.

Deadline says Yoba will reprise his role as Detective J.C. Williams, who is “now overseeing the unit and the next generation of detectives.” Yoba was the only actor to star in all four seasons of the series. With he and Michael DeLorenzo at the lead, New York Undercover was the first police procedural to feature to leads of color.

The revival would pick up 20 years after the end of the iconic series, following detectives Nat Gilmore and Melissa Ortiz “as they investigate the city’s most dangerous criminals, from Harlem to Battery Park.” Right now, the lead roles of Gilmore and Ortiz have not been cast.

New York Undercover isn’t the only cop drama reboot at ABC. The network is also developing an NYPD Blue reboot and has original cast members Kim Delaney and Bill Brochtrup set to return.

If the New York Undercover pilot is ordered to series (which is very likely), it would probably debut in fall 2019 or spring 2020. The pilot will wrap filming in March.
