The OWN network is no stranger to compelling scripted content. From Greenleaf to Queen Sugar, the television channel is always growing its slate of new shows. The channel announced today (May 8) that it's ushering in another a new show, a one-hour romantic dramedy titled Love Is______, the latest brainchild of Mara Brock Akil (who will also serve as showrunner) and Salim Akil.
Love Is______ is set in Los Angeles during the 1990s against the backdrop of Black Hollywood. The series chronicles the lives of Nuri (Michele Weaver) and Yasir (Will Catlett), a couple from seemingly different worlds, as they pursue their goals. Told from the perspective of the couple's present-day selves, the one-hour romantic drama explores the social issues and vibrant black culture and how it shaped the romantic duo two decades later as they become a power couple navigating the complex set of social codes that permeate Los Angeles.
Weaver will portray Nuri, a bubbly personality with the ambition to match who is struggling to make a name for herself as a sitcom staff writer while juggling a variety of romantic relationships that leave her mildly-fulfilled. Will Catlett portrays Yasir, an aspiring writer/director entangled an a complicated relationship with his on-again/off-again ex Ruby (Yootha Wong-Loi-Sing). A Different World alum Kadeem Hardison also stars as Norman, the executive producer of the hit sitcom Marvin (parody of the real-life sitcom Martin?) and Nuri's no-nonsense boss.
The series, inspired by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil's own romantic journey, will explore the ups and downs of falling and staying in love.
Love Is______ also stars Emmy winning actress Loretta Devine, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Sister, Sister alum Tim Reid, Michael King, Tosin Morohunfola and Tammy Townsend. The show's inception onto the OWN network would give viewers a sneak peek of black love set against the backdrop of Hollywood, as well as what it's like to create a living as a television writer and a black person in the entertainment industry. Love Is______ will premiere at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Tuesday, June 19.
