Martin Lawrence Will Make His Big Screen Return in Wilson Brothers Comedy

Last we heard from Martin Lawrence, he was co-starring in an FX comedy series titled “Partners” with Kelsey Grammer. The show didn’t make it past its first season. That was in 2014.

Announced today, Lawrence will be returning to the big screen to co-star in “Borat” director Larry Charles’ currently untitled comedy, along with the Wilson brothers – Luke and Owen.

In the movie, Luke Wilson will star as Howie Summers, a man who is falsely accused of robbing a bank, and ends up being sentenced to life in prison thanks to his incompetent lawyer (Owen Wilson). While locked up, he meets a fellow inmate name Slick, played by Martin Lawrence, who advises him on the ways of cell life, including how to find a wife on the outside, even if it’s a woman who doesn’t know well. He does just that, but when he’s released from prison, he finds himself married to a woman he barely knows.

Larry Charles is directing from a script penned by Luke Wilson with Buck Ritchey.

Filming is set to begin on July 11.

This is certainly not the kind of project I would expect Martin Lawrence to make his big screen “comeback” with, playing a prison inmate in a Wilson brothers comedy that he doesn’t even star in. Alas, this is the project he has signed up for.

The last time we saw Lawrence on the big screen was in 2011, in the dreadful “Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son” – a film which (we hope) put the beloved “Big Momma” franchise to bed for good.

In terms of other upcoming projects, there is the “Bad Boys” sequel that has supposedly been in the works for years now. We’re still waiting… Lawrence and Will Smith aren’t the young men that they used to be when they made the first 2 films.

Voltage Pictures is shopping the Wilson Brothers comedy to buyers in Cannes.
