Marvel Studios’ Blade reboot, titled Blade, the Vampire Slayer, has found its writer.

Stacy Osei-Kuffour, who was a story editor and writer on HBO Watchmen, will write the script for the Mahershala Ali-starring pic. Osei-Kuffor will be the first Black woman to write a Marvel film. Nia DaCosta, who will direct Captain Marvel 2, is Marvel’s first Black woman to direct.

The writer, who also worked on Amazon’s Hunters, nabbed an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for Hulu’s Pen15.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, “The studio has spent the last six months meeting with writers in what was described as a meticulous search, with Ali directly involved. Only Black writers were seriously considered, a reflection of Marvel’s focus on diversity and making representation a key factor — especially when tackling nonwhite characters.”

Wesley Snipes originally portrayed the half-vampire, half-mortal superhero and slayer of evil vampires in the 1998 film for New Line, which spawned two sequels. David Goyer wrote those films.

Ali is no stranger to Marvel, appearing as Cottonmouth in the Netflix series, Luke Cage, which at the time was said to share continuity with the MCU but there was never a formal connection established between the Netflix series and the films. All of those Netflix series will likely be rebooted at some point for Disney+. He also appeared in the critically-acclaimed Sony animated film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
