Method Man has revealed why he gave rapper Dave East the chance to portray him in the upcoming Hulu series Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

In a video he did with GQ in which he answered online questions as part of their “Actually Me” series, he was presented with the question, “How Dave East gon’ play Method Man when Method Man could play Method Man?”

Method Man revealed that he felt it was only right to give Dave East a chance to prove his acting skills.

“See, this has come up a lot,” he said. “I cannot play myself as young myself, it wouldn’t even look right.”

“I saw it as an opportunity for someone like myself when I first got into it, ’cause there weren’t a lot of people giving you a chance to show that you can do it,” he continued. “So when I seen Dave’s name in the pot I was like, ‘yeah he’s just like me. He wants to be an actor…give him a shot.'”

You can see the full video below, in which Method Man also reveals that he wants to play Bishop in a future Marvel X-Men film. (Please make this happen, Marvel!)

Created and written by Alex Tse (Superfly) and group frontman RZA, Wu-Tang: An American Saga has a 10-episode order from Hulu. Method Man is among the executive producers. Ghostface Killa, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and GZA are consulting producers. Chris Robinson will direct and co-executive produce the pilot.

The official description: Set in early ’90s New York at the height of the crack cocaine epidemic, the show tracks the Clan’s formation, a vision of Bobby Diggs (Sanders) aka The RZA, who strives to unite a dozen young, Black men that are torn between music and crime but eventually rise to become the unlikeliest of American success stories.

Ashton Sanders, Shameik Moore and Erika Alexander are among the series’ other stars.
