Chewing Gum fans will have to wait….indefinitely.

After a report ran this weekend that the show wouldn’t be returning, representatives for Michaela Coel are confirming the news.

A report ran in UK publication Broadcast over the weekend, saying that it would not be returning on Channel E4, and that Coel believed she reached “a creative peak” last season.

“She’s a very funny and clever writer so she’ll always have a home here if she wants to do a project with us. It’s bittersweet but it’s always been part of what we do here. We establish people and then there’s a point where they have to move on,” said Channel E4 exec Fiona McDermott in the report.

Now, Coel’s representatives confirmed the news with The Fader, but aren’t closing the door on the show entirely.

“Michaela is not currently writing a third series of Chewing Gum as she is focussing on some other projects, but is not closing the door to the possibility in the future,” said the rep.

Coel tweeted about the news, verifying The Fader’s report but noting she did not know of the original.

The TV series is based on Coel’s 2012 one-woman show, Chewing Gum Dreams, in which the 26-year-old played a teenage version of herself, as she related past experiences growing up in the working-class London neighborhoods of Hackney and Tower Hamlets, with her very religious mother, all while she became very acutely aware of her own sexuality, unprepared for the realities of sex and gender that she would face in the real world.

After a successful first season, leading to its creator and star winning the BAFTA TV award (essentially the UK’s equivalent of the Primetime Emmys) for best actress in a comedy series, a second season was ordered. Given the well-documented general lack of work available for black actors/actresses in the UK in film and TV, Chewing Gum‘s accomplishments (even its mere existence, taking into consideration its subject matter and star Coel) are certainly noteworthy.
