Michelle Obama Sets First Series Launch On Instagram With 'A Year Of Firsts'

January 08 2020

Former First Lady Michelle Obama is creating a new series via Instagram's IGTV.

According to Variety, Obama is working through her Reach Higher organization with digital news outlet ATTN: on A Year of Firsts, a six-episode series which will follow students "as they navigate their freshman year of higher education." The docuseries will begin in January and end in June.

Obama released a statement outlining her goals for the series.

"As a first-generation college student myself, I know how intimidating it can be to take that leap and pursue your educational dreams," she said, according to Variety. "That's why I'm so proud of these students. By sharing their stories, they're helping others see that the ups and downs of the first year of college are something everyone goes through--and they're creating a supportive community for others facing similar challenges."

ATTN: co-founder Matthew Segal also released a statement about the series, calling it one that will highlight "many hidden challenges to making it through college."

"This series will meet many students where they live--on Instagram--and share candid perspectives about how to overcome barriers," he said, according to Variety.

This is the latest branch of the Obamas' focus on outreach and advocacy through entertainment. In 2018, the Obamas signed a lucrative deal with Netflix to create series and films that highlight how everyday Americans are rising to meet the challenges of a changing country.
