Halle Berry has been tapped Moonfall, the upcoming space thriller slated to be co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich. The film will be distributed in North America by Lionsgate, which is eyeing a release date in 2021 and a production start date in the fall.

Moonfall will center around a team of astronauts who are sent on a mission on the lunar surface to save the human race after the moon is knocked from its orbit by a mysterious force and is poised to collide with Earth.

Emmerich wrote the script for Moonfall alongside Harald Kloser and Spenser Cohen. Berry will portray a NASA administrator and former astronaut whose previous space voyage holds a clue to the mystery surrounding the month’s course collision with Earth. Josh Gad has also been cast in the film.

This isn’t Berry’s first foray in the science fiction genre. The Oscar-winning actress starred in the 2012 film Cloud Atlas and portrayed astronaut Molly Woods in the CBS sci-fi drama Extant.

Soon, Berry will be making her directorial debut with the upcoming film, Bruised, which she will also star in.
