'Mr Robinson' Canceled by NBC While 'The Carmichael Show' Renewed

nullOn the heels of my post listing the new TV series with black actors in starring/lead/series regular roles coming to your TV screens this fall…

NBC has announced that it has canceled “Mr. Robinson,” its summer series starring Craig Robinson as lead singer and keyboardist of the funk band Nasty Delicious, who finds himself short on cash, and takes a job as a substitute high school music teacher. Meagan Good, Amandla Stenberg, Brandon T. Jackson, Spencer Grammer, Tim Bagley and Peri Gilpin rounded out the cast.

Worth noting is that the debut of "Mr Robinson" was strong for NBC considering that it was a summer series, with 4.6 million viewers. It was the most-watched summer-comedy debut on any of the Big 4 networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox) since 2007, and the #2 highest-rated summer comedy debut of the Big 4 networks since 2009.

The Carmichael ShowIt dropped a little bit in viewership as the season continued, but not terribly, averaging around 4 million per episode.

It may have been a case where the network had to pick one of its 2 summer series, and the went with the other one – "The Carmichael Show" – renewing it for a second season.

"Carmichael Show" averaged just a little higher a number in terms of viewers (4.3 million compared to 4 million) than "Mr Robinson."

"The Carmichael Show" is inspired by Jerrod Carmichael’s relationships with his say-anything contrarian father, therapist-in training girlfriend, ever-hustling brother and mother, who is always, always, always right with Jesus.

Amber West, Lil Rel Howery, David Alan Grier, and Loretta Devine co-star.

“We’re extremely proud of ‘The Carmichael Show’ and Jerrod’s voice and point of view is a breath of fresh air in a comedy series,” said President NBC Entertainment Jennifer Salke. “This show made a big impact with viewers and critics because it’s funny and relatable but also because it’s fearless about discussing issues that are significant in the world today. We appreciate all the hard work that has gone into this new family comedy from the producers, cast, and crew and look forward to bringing it back to the schedule later this season.”
