Nate Parker is having quite a year; from his much-anticipated Nat Turner film, “The Birth of a Nation,” which Fox Searchlight will release later this year; to launching a new film school at the historically black Wiley College in East Texas which will carry his name (The Nate Parker School of Film and Drama); to the numerous honors that have been bestowed on him all year, including the Sundance Institute’s presitious Vanguard Award; and other professional and private highlights he’s seen this year…

An obvious question many have is, what will Parker do next, when it comes to his acting and directing career?

A project I profiled earlier this year, which was shopped at the Cannes film market (Marché du Film) to potential buyers in May, is a globetrotting heist film titled “Predilection,” which Parker wrote and will possibly star in as well. To be directed by Marcio Garcia, the project is being repped by BB Film Productions and Bleiberg Entertainment, and is inspired by Garcia’s short film “Predileção,” which follows a low-level criminal and a legendary thief who meet in prison and hatch a plot for an elaborate robbery.

Parker is also producing with Uri Singer and Ehud Bleiberg, while Nick Donnermeyer serves as executive producer.

As of May, the project was being cast, with a late 2016 production start date eyed.

Another item on his slate is an adaptation of ESPN producer Lisa Fenn’s inspirational memoir “Carry On,” about the Emmy-winner’s 2009 return to her Cleveland hometown to chase a story of two disabled wrestlers (who happen to be black) who attended an impoverished public high school there. Walden Media will produce, as well as develop and finance the film which Parker (previously a wrestler himself) will adapt.

Add to those 2 projects, today’s announcement that Legendary Entertainment has picked up an original feature film idea from Parker, which he will write, direct and produce.

First reported by Deadline, details on the project are a mystery for now, other than the tease that it will involve the creation of a new world, which could mean anything. Might it be science fiction, as in the literal creation of a world, or something allegorical or a metaphorical? We’ll find out eventually.

In the meantime, Fox Searchlight has set an October 7, 2016 USA release date for “Birth of a Nation” – a film that’s on my 2017 Oscar predictions list.
