Nefertite Nguvu Partners with ImageNation on Limited Run for Award-Winning Feature, 'In the Morning'

On Thursday, April 20th, 2017, indie Filmmaker Nefertite Nguvu of the Production Company, Hollywood Africans, and Image Nation Cinema Organization will partner to host an exclusive screening and limited New York City run of the multiple award-winning feature film “In the Morning.” The debut feature film written and directed by Nguvu, charts the emotional anatomy of the lives, loves, infidelities, and enduring friendships of a group of interconnected New Yorkers over the course of one day.

Independently funded and shot in just eight days in Brooklyn, NY, the film delves into the emotional landscape of contemporary black life in a way rarely seen in modern cinema. “In the Morning” is a sophisticated adult drama, with both humor and intensity reminiscent of early Spike Lee and Woody Allen films, yet marks the arrival of a bold new voice in filmmaking.

“Sharing ‘In the Morning’ with audiences at film festivals has been incredible. Though this has been deeply fulfilling, I made this film with the hope that it would reach diverse audiences – including those who might not attend film festivals,” says Nefertite Nguvu. “Our film doesn’t fit within the narrow lens in which most films about Black lives are viewed and given our current socio-political climate, I know that expanding our narrative and telling our stories matters tremendously. After a successful festival run, sharing the film in Paris, Rome, South Africa and throughout the U.S. I am excited to now have the opportunity to connect our film directly with a much wider audience through partnerships with organizations such as Image Nation and our release on Video on Demand.”

Photographed by award-winning cinematographer Arthur Jafa (“Daughters of the Dust,” “Crooklyn”), and color-timed by Malik Sayeed (“Belly”), the film’s ensemble cast includes: Jacky Ido, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Numa Perrier, Kim Hill, De’adre Aziza, Hoji Fortuna, JoNell Kennedy and making debut’s Alzo Slade and CJ Lindsey.

In addition to the New York City run of the film at Image Nation, subsequent screenings will be held in Atlanta, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Newark, N.J. “In the Morning” will also be available worldwide via Video On Demand on Amazon, Vimeo on Demand, Xfinity Streampix and VHX.

Premiering at the 2014 UrbanWorld Film Festival, “In the Morning” won the Audience Award for Best Feature Film at UrbanWorld, Best International Film at the Terra Di Siena Film Festival in Italy, Best Narrative Feature at the BlackStar Film Festival in Philadelphia, and Best Feature Film and Best Overall at the Bronzelens Film Festival in Atlanta.
