With the hit series she created – “Underground” – currently in Limbo after WGN America’s parent company Tribune Media’s sale to Sinclair Broadcast, Misha Green’s new spec script “Mother” has been picked up by Netflix after what is said to have been an intense bidding war for the project, which is described as a female-led action movie with franchise potential that’s being compared to classics like “The Professional” and “La Femme Nikita.”

A “spec script” (speculative)  is essentially one that’s written without a deal already in place.

Details on “Mother” are few currently, so stay tuned…

Roy Lee will co-produce “Mother” alongside Green.

CAA brokered this deal for Netflix.

It comes at what feels like a good time for actioners starring women, with women in control behind the camera, as “Wonder Woman” makes history at the box office this weekend. In addition, I should mention Taraji P. Henson’s hitwoman thriller “Proud Mary,” which is currently filming, set for a January 2018 theatrical release.

In addition to “Mother,” Green is also developing “Lovecraft Country” with Jordan Peele and J.J. Abrams as a series set up at HBO; and  a teen ghost feature project at Paramount.

She’s repped by CAA.

Deadline was first to report the news on “Mother.”
